Portfolio for the ai-et Fellow in the Grants Lane

Capturing what’s already there (relevant existing work and people in H&A at SJSU):

  • Construct an annotated list of the grant work on ethical technologies by H&A administrators and faculty, plus a repository of grant proposals grantees are willing to share.

  • Construct a directory of H&A faculty with experience undertaking grant-writing work on ethical technologies.

  • Work with practitioners to describe this existing work and how it matters (e.g., for ai-et Annual Report, pieces for SJSU Magazine, etc.).

Building structures to support new grant-seeking projects and communities of practice:

  • Seek support (internal from Academic Affairs, Office of Research, etc., or from private sector partner(s)) to fund the second semester of the ai-et Fellowships.

  • Identify and publicize funding opportunities to H&A faculty, students, and staff.

  • Participate in writing a major grant proposal to support ai-et.

  • Convene sessions to connect H&A people interested in finding grant-writing collaborators for ai-et related projects.

  • Establish contacts in, in conjunction with your mentor, Research Foundation and Tower’s Corporate and Foundations Relations (CFR) to support grant seeking.

  • Set up a directory of H&A faculty seeking ai-et-related funding opportunities and/or collaborators for grant-seeking around such funding opportunities.

  • Through Associate Dean Mary Anderson, engage with ADRs of other colleges to help them connect their faculty with H&A collaborators for robust engagement with grants that address ai-et values.

  • Organize a session to share/brainstorm concrete strategies to document ai-et grant-writing projects and their impacts as RSCA for RTP.

  • Work with ai-et support staff to organize lane-relevant information to be posted on the ai-et website and to develop a strategy to keep posted information current.

Exploring overlaps/connections/synergies with the other ai-et lanes:

RSCA

  • Work with RSCA Fellow and SJSU RTP policy to share models for documenting significant ai-et related grant proposals as RSCA outputs.

  • Help construct descriptions of local ai-et-related RSCA accomplishments to support grant proposals (especially to answer the questions “why you? why here?”).

  • Work with RSCA Fellow to flag grant opportunities that require collaborations of particular sorts and to share these with the network of H&A faculty practitioners engaged in ai-et-related work (to make assembling teams that fulfil the grantors’ requirements more organic and less transactional).

  • Work with RSCA Fellow to identify appropriate venues to publish/present/perform the grant-funded work.

PEDAGOGY

  • Work with Pedagogy Fellow to identify funding opportunities for research on ai-et related pedagogical methods and tools.

  • Work with Pedagogy Fellow to identify ai-et related funding opportunities in which student participation is required and to think through strategies for identifying groups of students who could participate.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  • Work with Community Engagement Fellow to create public-facing programming aimed at potential donors (from SJSU alumni, philanthropic groups, private sector) built around ai-et related RSCA projects.

  • Work with RSCA and Community Engagement Fellow to build capacity for grant-funded community-engaged ai-et-related RSCA projects (e.g., how to work with the IRB, how to partner with communities rather than engaging with them in extractive ways, etc.).

All four Fellows will help produce:

  • A working mission statement for ai-et, to be posted on the ai-et website, on which the Institute will continue to iterate over time.

  • Text for a Fall 2027 Annual Report.
